Strange Shark Species Found In Indian Ocean

New strange-looking shark species from the Indian Ocean has been discovered. Researchers revealed that it belongs to the Apristurus spongiceps subgroup and is the second known species occurring in the western Indian Ocean.

Researchers from the Pacific Shark Research Center in the US conducted surveys in 2012 and 2014 along the Southwest Indian Ridge or the underwater mountain system. This bisects the Indian Ocean between Africa and Antarctica. The research team was studying the seamounts situated to the south of Madagascar. In the process, they collected 8 deep-sea sharks and conducted a detailed study.  They found out the sharks actually belong to a new catshark species and they named it Apristurus manocheriani. The common name that has been proposed is Manocherian’s Catshark, in the honour of Greg Manocherian, a supporter of shark conservation and research. The new species is part of the largest shark family, Pentachidae and also part of the largest order of sharks, Carcharhiniformes

Department of Ichthyology at the California Academy of Sciences is preserving the specimen of them as a new shark species. An average male and female of the species can measure about 55cm and 49cm, respectively. It has numerous large teeth on its upper and lower jaw. This new species looks quite different from the other species of sharks. The findings of this study were published in the Journal of the Ocean Science Foundation.

According to the lead author of the study David A. Ebert, Sharks are a very diverse group of animals. There are nearly 536 different species of sharks. This new study also underlines our lack of in-depth knowledge about the deep ocean.

The researchers are not aware of any known threats to this species as of now. But more research and analysis would be conducted as it has been named already. The researchers are also studying a few other species which were collected from the same region.
