One Nation One Ration Card Scheme

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a devastating loss of human life worldwide and presented us with an unparalleled challenge to public health, food systems and the economy. The economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic is worldwide. Millions of people are at risk of falling into extreme poverty, while the number of undernourished population is steadfast increasing.

India is one of the worst affected countries. It has created a dilemma between life and livelihood and the migrant workforce of the country suffered and still suffering the worst blow with the loss of basic income and food security. To address this problem, The Government of India launched a scheme named One Nation One Ration Card. This scheme aims to provide a nationwide ration card which would migrant workers and their families to avail the benefits of the public distribution system from any fair price shop across the country.

  • The existing ration card would be turned into a One Nation One Ration Card.
  • It would be allotted to each beneficiary under National Food Security Act.
  • Regardless of the origin of the beneficiaries, if they migrate from one place to another, they can buy subsidised food grains from fair price shop located in the city they migrated to.
  • Integrated Management of Public Distribution System portal and Annavitran portal would be used to provide technological platforms for the ration card portability.
  • Aadhar card would be linked to the ration card.

As of now, 81 crores beneficiaries are reported to get the benefits of this scheme once all states/UTs will be integrated. The government is also planning to launch a helpline number for assistance. The One Nation One Ration Card Scheme is expected to help in eradicating hunger by 2030. But challenges regarding lack of data and exclusion error are creating hindrance in the success of the scheme.
