AMRUT Mission

Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs organised a virtual event to commemorate six years of the three transformative Urban Missions vis. Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban. The day also noted the 45th year of the National Institute of Urban Affairs. One of the missions, AMRUT, is especially important in urban development projects. Let us discuss it in detail. 

 

Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Transformation was launched in June 2015 as the new version of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to focus on adopting a project to improve basic infrastructure services like water supply, sewerage, transportation, green spaces and parks especially catering to the needs of children. The selected cities have been divided into different categories such as cities and towns with a population over one lakh, all capital cities of States and UTs, Thirteen cities and towns on primary positions near main rivers with a population of 75000, cities and towns classified as Heritage cities by MoHUA and ten cities from hill states, islands and tourist destination.

Focal points: To guarantee that every household has taps with a definite supply of water. 

To improve sewerage connections. 

 

To make public transports more comfortable and accessible and construction of  amenities to support non-motorized transport walking like cycling and walking which in turn would reduce pollution. 

 

To increase the number of green spaces and child-friendly parks in cities and towns to add to the aesthetic value. 

 

Under the mission, ten per cent of the fund allocation would be given to states and Union Territories based on their achievement of reforms the previous year. Within 7 days of transfer by the central government, the states are directed to transfer the funds to the urban local bodies. 

 

Himachal Pradesh is ranked 15th and Uttarakhand 24th whereas Odisha topped AMRUT’s National ranking.
