Afghan Crisis: UNSC Meeting Set To Be Held on Friday

The UN Security Council is set to hold an urgent meeting on Friday under the Presidency of India. The agenda is to discuss the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, following multiple blasts in Kabul, including a car explosion outside the defence minister’s residence.

On Tuesday, Afghanistan Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar requested a special discussion on the deteriorating situation. India holds the Presidency of the UN Security Council this month. The discussion has been requested not just by the Afghan government but also by Norway and Estonia. The meeting will take place at 7.30 pm IST.

Key Focus:

  • Discussion on Taliban control over large swathes of the countryside.
  • The challenges the Afghan government forces are facing due to Taliban attacks in several large cities, including Herat, near the western border with Iran, and Kandahar in the south.
  • According to Ambassador TS Tirumurti who is India’s permanent representative to the UN, the meeting will also consult on the developments in the war-torn country of Afghanistan.
  • The Afghan authorities expect the meeting to focus on violation of the commitment under the 2020 agreement executed by the Taliban Militants after the U.S. forces withdrew themselves and to give a strong nudge to the peace process in Afghanistan that has been stalled for several months.

The meeting was summoned following consultations with the five permanent and nine other non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Despite the talks on possible solutions to the Taliban violence, that might be an unlikely outcome. One of the Afghan officials cited, “There is a need for pressure on the Taliban and their sponsors to reduce the violence. It is clear who is backing the violence and supporting the Taliban,” indicating strongly towards the Pak support of the Taliban forces. But China, being a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, would try to every critical move that is directed against Pakistan.
