  1. The chaotic moon of Jupiter: Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and has 79 known moons. But one of these moons is not dormant like the earth’s moon. The Jovian moon Io has hundreds of active volcanoes. It is one of the most active moons of the solar system. The Pluto-bound New Horizons craft caught a glimpse of Io bursting as it passed by in 2007. So why are Io’s volcanoes so active? It is because the moon is exposed to immense gravitational force as it is nestled into Jupiter’s gravity well. It generates enough energy to cause volcanic eruptions.

  1. Mars has the longest valley: Mars has a valley named Valles Marineris, which is much much larger than the Grand Canyon. In fact, it is almost the same size as the United States of America. This huge martian canyon is more than 10 times longer than the Grand Canyon. But there is no explanation on how the canyon formed as there is a lack of plate tectonics on Mars.

  1. The Shrinking Mercury: MESSENGER spacecraft did the first orbital mission at Mercury and mapped the whole planet in high definition, getting a look at the features on its surface. The report uncovered cliff-like landforms. The fault scarps were fairly small, which indicates that they weren’t created very long ago and the planet is actually still contracting even 4.5 billion years after its formation.
